The family of Jordan West-Morson is seeking answers, justice and wants the Detroit Police Department and Wayne County Prosecutor’s office to act.
“(Police) know who the shooter is and have the weapon. There are eyewitness accounts. Why hasn’t the man been charged? We are just trying to get answers,” says Boyd Morson, the victim’s uncle.
Jordan Morson was killed May 1 at a gas station on the corner of Eight Mile Road near Gratiot. He was a hip hop artist, who often sold his music outside the store. He was fatally shot by an off-duty Detroit transit officer.
The officer was taken into custody the day of the shooting and told officers Morson tried to grab his gun. The name of the Detroit Transit officer has not yet been released.
The 26-year-old victim was reportedly unarmed.
Boyd Morson cannot believe it has been eight weeks since Jordan was shot and the family still doesn’t have any information and the shooter is “walking free.”
“With the emergency manager taking over and all that, we are still paying people to do their jobs. I am just asking for people to do their job,” says Boyd Morson.
The transit officer works for the Detroit Transportation Corporation, which operates the Detroit People Mover.
Morson says his nephew teamed up with him to work on an anti-tobacco campaign, warning young people about the dangers of smoking. Ironically, Morson notes, the young Black man died of gun violence not tobacco use.
The Wayne County Prosecutors office would not make a comment on the ongoing investigation.
Morson attended University of Detroit Jesuit and graduated from Finney High School.
