Run and Russell Simmons’ older brother, Danny Simmons, who in addition to being a rapper is an abstract-expressionist artist, poet, and author, will join legendary bassist Ron Carter (See “Motown in the Big Apple”) for an evening of music and poetry at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Aug. 15. The two performances (beginning at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. respectively) will feature Simmons reading from his new book, “The Brown Beatnik Tomes,” accompanied by Ron Carter on bass. Simmons co-founded Def Poetry Jam with his brother Russell. Their father, Daniel Simmons, Sr. was also a poet. In addition to Simmons and Carter’s pieces, the DIA promises a number of surprise guest poets will perform. The event is free of charge with museum admission, which is free for all residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties. The DIA is located at 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit.
