Charivari is a name recognized in Detroit electronic music history as the early 1980s party that set the scene for many of the city’s great house and techno musicians. The name will once again be featured as a two-day music festival at William G. Milliken State Park along the Detroit River, August 2-3, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. both days.
Charivari Detroit 2014 is free and open to all ages.
“Charivari actually started about 30 years ago as a social club.” said Todd Johnson, one of the event’s primary organizers. “And over the years they threw dozens of dozens of parties and there were lots of DJs that you have out here now came from that era.”
The event came together through the connections of people who were a part of that original social club, which has been a continuous brand with parties being thrown throughout the years. Charivari Detroit 2014 is a tribute to the way those parties used to be thrown.
“We’d like to bring back the fun, the interaction again, the spectacle of what the party used to be,” says Johnson.
Featured DJ performers include Eddie Fowlkes, Delano Smith, Terrence Parker, Bruce Bailey, Kyle Hall, Detroit Techno Militia, Kenny Dixon, D Wynn, Mike “Agent X» Clark, Gary Chandler and Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale, over two dozen artists throughout the two day event.
“If anything, I’d say we want to bring back the dance,” says Johnson.
