The 16th annual Allied Media Conference, scheduled to return to the campus of Wayne State University June 19-22, is a gathering of progressive media creators, academics and grassroots activists discussing the future of media and the ways in which it can transform the world.
The Allied Media Conference is designed around the concepts of “create, connect and transform,” inspiring the building of new communication infrastructure, connecting networks to improve community relationships, and using these tools to create a new vision for the world.
Women’s issues, youth education, racial justice, urban development, international solidarity and many more specific social issues are discussed through the lens of tomorrow’s media landscape, with presentations by visiting academics, journalists, multimedia artists and community activists.
Registration for the four-day conference is $125, with a sliding scale allowing select participants to attend for as low as $50. The main program for the Allied Media Conference will take place on the campus of Wayne State University at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center.
The Allied Media Conferences considers the open, friendly atmosphere among visitors as important if not more than educational sessions, creating a space for safe knowledge sharing.
Several social events will take place, including a June 19 open mic, a June 20 “DJ Chill Out,” and bowling and karaoke at The Majestic. The Raiz Up, a popular Southwest Detroit hip hop and activism collective, will present their educational session “Hip Hop Engages Gentrification” at 2 p.m. on June 21 afternoon.
Also on June 21 at 8 p.m., a live Detroit music showcase will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, 4454 Woodward Ave, featuring Underground Resistance presents D3 (live), Lola Valley, Shigeto, MGUN, Little Animal and Tunde Olaniran.
The concert is free for AMC attendees and costs $15 for individual tickets. Organizers encourage advance online purchases, as the estimate the event will sell out.
Among the dozens of themes covered in conference sessions will be “Racial Justice and Surveillance,” “Youth Media and Movements,” “Media Strategies for Transforming Justice,” and “Building Better Futures through Play.” Attendees will include national and international visitors, individuals uniquely focused on building sustainable local and long-distance networks of media visionaries.
