Sidewalk worker, $23 an hour[/caption] The workers said they live in Detroit, in Mexican Town, and are paid $23 an hour. Max Giorgi, owner of the company, said the project is federally funded, and thus prevailing wage is paid. At the same time, a four-person crew was picking up trash on the traffic island on Gratiot Avenue across from Brewery Park. The four young African American workers said they all live in Pontiac, are employed by Brickman and are paid $8 an hour. Finally, a crew of about 12 African Americans, all Detroit residents, were picking up litter on the Lodge service drive just south of Edison. They were not being paid anything; they were working off court fines.
