[new_royalslider id="39"] On April 16, the Detroit Lions new head coach, Jim Caldwell, sat down to eat with more than 300 Detroit Public School and Educational Achievement Authority student athletes at the United Auto Workers-Ford’s (which hosted the event) National Programs Center.  During the meal, Caldwell offered the students his thoughts on sport(wo)manship and respect, after which the students were able to ask the coach questions. UAW-Ford Vice President James Settles was happy to be involved with the event, saying, “UAW-Ford is committed to the neighborhoods where our members live and work, and violence is far too prevalent,” said Settles.  “Coach Caldwell recognizes that mutual respect is key to building good relationships and strong communities.” In addition to the Coach Caldwell, the students were able to speak to former NBA player and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing. “Student-athletes are leaders at their schools,” said Caldwell. “But real leaders display sportsmanship, and make the right choices on and off the field.” —Staff report
