DETROIT — The Detroit Police Department has launched CrimeMapping.com. The website is an advanced mapping engine that offers crime incident information to many law enforcements and public safety agencies and is now available to citizens.
CrimeMapping.com will allow the Detroit Police Department to provide citizens with valuable information about criminal activities affecting their neighborhoods and other areas in the city of Detroit. DPD says their goal is to reduce crime by raising awareness and build trust between the police and the communities.
The CrimeMapping.com can be accessed online and via iPhone, but not yet on the Android platform. Downloading the iPhone app is free. In using the website/app, residents will have an opportunity to learn about specific crimes, research past criminal incidents and analyze trends. Additionally, a DPD press release promises the ESRI geographic engine will provide citizens with the most accurate and current information available.
According to DPD, it is not “common” for the police to share this much information with the public, but they believe it will be an effective tool in keeping the public informed and reducing crime in many areas. The press release stated the tool will also be used to further enhance the department’s community oriented policing efforts.
“Transparency helps build trust and the Detroit Police Department has taken the steps necessary in helping neighbors look out for each other,” the release stated.
