Billboards across the city display an incorrect date for the General Election.[/caption]
Put blame on contractor
DETROIT - The City Clerk and Department of Elections have some explaining to do.
For the past several days, Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey and the elections department have informed voters via their billboards throughout the city that the General Election is Sept. 2.
The Clerk's office directed the Michigan Citizen to the Department of Elections for an explanation. "They're responsible for (the information on the billboards)," a spokesperson said.
Spokesperson for the Department of Elections Gina Avery said the error was noticed over the weekend.
Fingers are pointing, and the elections department says the error "had to be with the contractor" who put up the wrong date.
How could such an error happen? Elections are never held in September.
Avery could not provide an explanation or give further information as to the name of the contractor or the cost of the contract. Although, she said fixing the error will not cost the city.
“That’s their error, not ours,” Avery told the Michigan Citizen.
The correct date for the General Election, November 5, should be up by Aug. 13, according to Avery.
