Oakman Orthopedic School parent Antonio Council wraps in “Save Oakman” banner to keep warm. Parents and students braved the rain and cold to demonstrate in front of the Fischer Building, May 23. The parents are engaged in a struggle to keep their special school open for their special needs children after EM Roy Roberts announced his unilateral decision April 10. According to the new EM law, PA 436, the EM is bound to refer all decisions that involve more than $50,000 to the elected board. The elected board then has a period of time to study the educational impact of the closing and offer an alternative.
Board President Lamar Lemmons says Roberts has not presented any school closing plan to the board. The board wants to see cost estimates of moving and rehabbing the receiving schools slated to receive the Oakman students.
Other school closings include the relocation of Davis Aerospace Academy. The Tuskegee Airmen have joined the battle to keep that facility at city airport.
