The second annual Sidewalk Festival of Performing Arts returns Aug. 2, bringing performance art, visual arts and music back to Detroit’s Old Redford/Brightmoor neighborhoods. From 3 p.m. until sundown at Lahser just north of Grand River, dancers, musicians, actors, painters, poets and more will come together in celebration of Detroit’s cutting edge creative community.
The activities will take place in and around the alleys and inside the Artist Village and Motor City Java House, with music across Redford Street at the Temple of Dreams outdoor stage. The event is designed to challenge traditional ways of experiencing art by placing it in a familiar neighborhood setting.
“Our objective is to take away all traditional spaces and to put dance and music and performing arts where it shouldn’t be,” said organizer Ryan Myers-Johnson, a Detroit performance dance artist, at last year’s inaugural event. “Detroit is experiencing this amazing artistic renaissance right now, a lot of it centered around Midtown, which is awesome, I love it. But I really want to create some artistic bridges across communities, across neighborhoods.”
Featured music acts include Underground Resistance presents D3, Tunde Olaniran, Passalacqua and Chorale Corral, along with the Detroit Party Marching Band and many others. Stage performances include Shakespeare in Detroit, 313 Soul Entertainment LLC, livearts 365, Mosaic Youth Theater and more.
Dance performers include Maya and “Quaint” Stovall, Auto Mobile Body Works, Teen Hype, D.a.n.c.e. Inc., Studio Detroit and Epihany Dance Theater. Visual art installations will also be placed throughout the festival grounds.
