Michigan Welfare Rights Organization founders Marian Kramer and Maureen Taylor welcomed the caravan of Canadians bringing water to Detroit July 24.
Greeted with cheers from over 100 activists, the Canadians were responding to the recent shut offs commanded by Emergency Manger Kevyn Orr and condemned by the three United Nations experts.
While no elected Detroit city officials have taken any steps to stop or even condemn the 15,000 water shut offs, Detroit Water and Sewer Department officials are using the 15-day moratorium on shut offs to check on homes without service to guarantee that water has not been “illegally restored.”
DWSD is threatening those residents with water turned back on without the department’s authorization with fines and fees in addition to the outstanding water bills.
Kramer and Taylor are part of the international effort to get water recognized as a human right that cannot be denied citizens for lack of money.
