I will vote for Elena

By Sam Riddle Special to the Michigan Citizen I will vote for Elena Herrada, the one candidate Gov. Rick Snyder does not want in Lansing. A mother of four, this life-long Detroiter knows firsthand the challenge of raising a family during tough times in a tough azz city. Still, Elena is the most energetic grandmother to ever seek office that I have known. Elena is running for state representative in the 6th district — my district. There are a number of good people running for the same position. But there is only one candidate that I know for damn sure will fight and has gone to jail for us, and who, when elected, will continue to do battle for a better, fairer America, Michigan and Detroit — Elena Herrada. Elena Herrada — jailed fighting to keep the water on in Detroit. As one who went to prison for all the wrong reasons, it is an honor to support one who has been incarcerated for all the right reasons. Please spare me the divisive race piece “vote for the brother,” “vote for the sister” crap. I identify friends and enemies on the basis of behavior not race, skin color or whom they love. And Elena could well be a founding member of Sisters United. IJS. Credentials? Herrada earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in industrial relations from Wayne State University. Elena has also served as president of local union RWDSU1064. Experience? Elena has been on the frontlines as a Detroit School Board member fighting Gov. Snyder’s EAA that has failed our children miserably. If you get nothing else about Elena know Herrada wants a Michigan that is good for all its citizens not just the wealthy few that control too much for too many. Classic example: Of the billions American city taxpayers have given for corporate welfare to big stadiums there has never been an appreciable gain except to line the pockets of sport team owners. Now in Detroit one media outlet has given birth to an “expert” delivering cost-benefits analysis — Drew Sharp — the oft justly maligned sportswriter. What has a sportswriter ever built other than incomplete sentences? The people of Detroit have no community benefits agreement thanks to the Ilitch land give away by an impotent Detroit Council. Depending on the benevolence of the already rich has never been a good deal for the poor, working poor or middle class. Remember Marathon Oil’s trail of broken promises? Now a Red Wings hockey puck is the beneficiary of hundreds of millions in media-enabled corporate welfare while 60 percent of Detroit kids live in poverty many with no running water. KMA. We must never let haters cause us to lose hope or dislike ourselves and never let haters make you weak in your faith. Keep the faith. Stay on the battlefield.
