Summer program aims to make diplomats of Detroit teens

Wayne State University’s Center for Peace and Conflict Studies and the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights will host the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute 2014, July 21-24, on the main Detroit campus. During the event, high school students will examine conflict resolution, diversity, civil rights, negotiation, bullying, environmental science, social justice, international  affairs and how to individually foster peace within their own communities. The skills they gain from this year’s summer institute will enable them to establish creative mechanisms of non-violent solutions where conflict and violence may exist, organizers say. Ralph Bunche, a Detroiter, educator civil rights activist and diplomat, negotiated the first Arab-Israeli cease-fire in 1949. For that great contribution and more, he won the Nobel Peace Prize, making him the first person of color to do so. For more information, contact Barbara L.
