Opportunity of a lifetime: Send three young Detroit-based woodworkers to China to share the art of woodworking with their Chinese peers
Emerging out of an abandoned garage in the Brightmoor community on the west side of Detroit, the Brightmoor Woodworkers began to make handcrafted wooden signs both as a community service project and as a business. From summer 2011 to the present, the Brightmoor Woodworkers have created and installed nearly 50 signs in the Brightmoor community and other locations in Detroit, including The Michigan Citizen newspaper in Corktown.

The original Brightmoor Woodworkers have been presented with an opportunity of a lifetime to travel from Detroit to Beijing and participate in a landscape design project at the China National Children’s Center (CNCC) this August. The opportunity came about from “friends” in China who worked with the young woodworkers in Brightmoor during the summer of 2011.
Since that time, they have built an international partnership for experiential learning through the Sunbridge International Collaborative. This will be the first of many times that we will partake in a student exchange program. While in Beijing, the Brightmoor Woodworkers will have an opportunity to impart their handcrafted woodworking skills to a group of Chinese teenagers, and also help out with the landscape design project.
Help the efforts of Kyle Baker, Jr.; Tanay Floyd; and Lashay Pearson to raise $13,000 to fund their trip.
The young entrepreneurs are holding a fundraiser Saturday, July 19, 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the the Motor City Java & Tea House, 17336 Lahser Rd. to raise money for their trip.
