Staff report
Photojournalist Monica Morgan is showing her work at a fundraiser for state representative candidate Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, June 26.
The exhibit, “Global Journey” consists of images Morgan has taken of President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama, Rosa Parks and photos from the funeral service of South African global icon Nelson Mandela who died in December. She has selected images she believes will highlight her career.
“I am in a place where I have sat back and been still. I can look back at the things I have done,” says Morgan. “I have been so busy taking images, I didn’t have time to enjoy them or think about them.”
Morgan says she is hosting this event for Gay-Dagnogo because of the candidate’s commitment to children.
“Our children today need so much. Creativity is extremely important in helping people find themselves,” says Morgan who mentors young people and is always looking for opportunities to teach them photography.
“I think photography helps children see things in a different perspective and look at the good in life and appreciate the things they might take for granted. I might take them to an alley, but they can still find beauty in the setting.”
This week, Gay-Dagnogo announced she received the Network for Public Education endorsement — national endorsement and a boost led by education policy analyst and activist Diane Ravitch, according to Gay-Dagnogo.
“With the crisis we find ourselves in within the city of Detroit, a ‘Global Journey’ will celebrate our interconnectedness as we continue to advance more than a campaign but also a movement,” says Gay-Dagnogo.
Morgan says her work is distinguished by her images of people and by her ability to “capture the essence of a person.” Morgan, a Wayne State University graduate, was born and raised in Detroit.
Gay-Dagnogo is running in the new 8th District.
The event will be held 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Motor City Java and Tea House (17336 Lahser Rd. Detroit). For ticket info, call 313.643.5323.
