DETROIT — Friends of Detroit Rowing recently announced the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has approved a grant request for expansion of its Youth Learn-to-Row Program.
“This grant helps Friends of Detroit Rowing build on its mission of expanding the sport of rowing throughout the Detroit metropolitan area,” said FDR president Todd Platt. “Youth are the lifeblood of the sport… This also can help open doors that may not have otherwise been accessible.”
Multiple sessions will be offered from June through August. The one-and-a-half hour classes, held in Belle Isle’s Boat Club building, will be offered at different times between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. weekdays.
The three-week program costs $200 and is available to any middle/high school students interested. Space is limited and participants must know how to swim and be able to manage a 12-foot oar.
FDR members say students will begin to learn the rowing stroke on indoor machines, before advancing to rowing a competitive racing shell with other students out on the open water.
