The Ujamaa Food Co-op Buying Club is one of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network’s many programs. Through this program, members of the club are able to purchase a wide variety of healthy foods, supplements and household items at discounted prices, while demonstrating the collective buying power of Detroiters
Every four weeks, members submit orders through our vendor, United Natural Foods (UNFI), which is the largest natural foods distributor in the United States, which supplies Whole Foods Market and the Natural Food Patch in Ferndale. Each member receives a user name and password, with which they can log into the UNFI web site, browse products and choose items to order. Orders are submitted electronically and are delivered to the DBCFSN office at 3800 Puritan.
UNFI has an extensive selection of items to choose from, including bulk beans, nuts, and grains, frozen and refrigerated items, cereals, vitamins and supplements, soaps and detergents, and so on. Anything available through popular local health food stores is available through UNFI, except for fresh produce, which can be acquired from the DBCFSN’s D-Town farm seasonally.
There is currently no membership fee required to join the club now, but members may have the need/opportunity to vote on instituting one in the future in order to open a brick-and-mortar grocery store.

Additionally, the UFCBC also stocks a number of items at their “convenience store,” located in the DBCFSN office.
According to the DBCFSN’s website, “Our present organization is only the beginning. We are working to grow our buying club into a full service store that will be operated within the city of Detroit. We have already conducted a feasibility study, we are currently working on a business plan, and we have some potential sites identified.”
Orders for the next UFCBC shipment are due May 15, with delivery of those orders scheduled for May 22.
