WCCCD’s Executive Dean for International Programs joins Midwest Institute Board of Directors

David C. Butty, executive dean for international programs and media specialist, who also directs the Wayne County Community College District’s Study Abroad Program, has been elected to the Midwest Institute for International/Intercultural Education (MIIE)’s Board of Directors for fiscal years 2014-2016. Mr. Butty was elected at the organization’s 21st Annual Conference held at Columbus State Community College in Columbus, Ohio. The Midwest Institute is a self-funded consortium of two-year colleges located in the Midwest region. Its primary objective is to promote and support curriculum and professional development in international and intercultural education by organizing curriculum workshops and conferences, overseas projects for faculty and students, assistance with grant development, as well as providing faculty mentoring and professional networking. Butty[/caption] The governance of the MIIIE consortium rests with a 13-member Board that is elected bi-annually and is administered by four officers (director, associate director, secretary, and treasurer). Mr. Butty had been executive dean for the WCCCD’s Study Abroad Program and has led successful study abroad programs to Ghana, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Brazil, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, India and France. He has a wealth of experience in international education and helping students understand the global marketplace and diversity. He has developed and coordinated educational and cultural seminars and conferences for the WCCCD’s urban multi-campus community college system including celebrated programs such as Passport to Africa, Global Education, and the Caribbean Heritage Cultural Festival. He is the producer of the regional and nationally distributed District publications including «Study Abroad, Bring Home the World, Advantages, Flavor, Art, The Connecting Thread, and Dimensions.” Mr. Butty has more than 30 years of experience in journalism and international relations, including service with the Liberian Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, was the press and cultural attaché at the Liberian Embassy in London, England and served as a copy editor, columnist, and reporter for The Detroit News, where he created the News’ series, “Understanding Africa.” He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations, with emphasis on Iintercultural communications from the University of Minnesota. He also did a year of study at the London School of Journalism in London, England.
