DETROIT —Detroit Community Schools, a charter high school located in Detroit’s Brightmoor neighborhood recently expanded its educational partnership with Wayne County Community College District. Before the expansion, “the DCS/WC3 concurrent enrollment program was limited to advance placement mathematics students,” said DCS Superintendent Sharon McPhail.
That program rewards students, who satisfied the requirements for college level math classes at WC3, with four credits in algebra transferrable to WCCCD or other colleges/universities.
“Effective February 2014, hundreds of additional DCS students will earn tuition — free college credits along with their high school diploma,” says McPhail. All 457 of DCS’ 9th-12th grade students will each earn one WCCCD credit upon completion of a course in career and professional development taught by WCCCD professors at the high school.
WCCCD has also accepted and enrolled 23 high school seniors in Psychology 101, which will be taught on the DCS campus. Students who successfully complete the course work will earn three college credits at the end of the spring semester in May 2014. Students will not be required to pay for the course.
The 2014/2015 school year will add speech and humanities coursework as well.
“This program provides a tremendous opportunity for our students to earn valuable college credits and job training before they leave high school,” said McPhail. Additionally, the program will help to create the college mindset in DCS’ students.”
