The portraits will hang on the walls just outside the Commission Chambers in the Guardian Building from Feb. 3-28. The exhibit features David Augustus Straker, a Wayne County Circuit Court Commissioner and the first African American judicial officer in Michigan, along with coroner John Wilson, auditor Richard Austin and Wayne County’s first executive and three-term sheriff, William Lucas. “African American History Month is an opportunity for all of us to stop our busy lives for a moment and reflect on the great accomplishments that African American men and women have achieved,” Wayne County Commission Vice Chair Pro Tem Jewell Ware told the Michigan Citizen.
