Portraits honor Black officials

[caption id="attachment_10144" align="alignleft" width="288"] “African Americans in Wayne County Government History” exhibit[/caption] The Wayne County Commissioners will commemorate February as Black History Month by exhibiting portraits of prominent African American officials with ties to Wayne County. The portraits will hang on the walls just outside the Commission Chambers in the Guardian Building from Feb. 3-28. The exhibit features David Augustus Straker, a Wayne County Circuit Court Commissioner and the first African American judicial officer in Michigan, along with coroner John Wilson, auditor Richard Austin and Wayne County’s first executive and three-term sheriff, William Lucas. “African American History Month is an opportunity for all of us to stop our busy lives for a moment and reflect on the great accomplishments that African American men and women have achieved,” Wayne County Commission Vice Chair Pro Tem Jewell Ware told the Michigan Citizen.
