The coldest temperatures in years — dropping to 15 degrees below zero with windchills of minus 35 — have hit Detroit due to the so-called polar vortex, dense Arctic air, keeping residents inside. Record breaking temperatures plummeted across the country. In Michigan, officials urged residents to stay in doors. Schools closed another three days following holiday vacation because of the extremely frigid weather. Eight deaths were reported statewide.
