Wayne County Clerk obtains Detroit birth and death records

DETROIT — On Dec. 10, Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett announced her office will take over issuing Detroit’s birth and death certificates in the new year. The city of Detroit operation will be unavailable from Dec. 16, 2013 until Jan. 14, 2014. Beginning Jan. 14, Detroit birth and death records can be obtained at 640 Temple Street — Sixth Floor; Detroit, with same-day service and free parking, representatives announced.

Garrett’s office will be accepting city of Detroit mailed requests addressed to: The Office of the Wayne County Clerk — City of Detroit Vitals; 640 Temple Street – Sixth Floor; Detroit, MI 48201. Mailed requests must be sent in letter form, and include the signature, return address, and phone number of the individual requesting a record. A photocopy of the requestor’s ID must be included with all birth record requests. Payment must be included (via money order) for all requests — $22 for the first certified copy of a birth or death certificate, and $7 for any additional copies.
